      re: Draft Friends Mentoring Action Plan

      Commendations to the team who wrote this plan – great job!

      I am especially interested in the development of the Online Mentoring program using the new Refuge Friends Connect site.

      As a result of the March 1, 2013 Sequester decision and the potential cuts in Visitor Services, the expanded use of online…[Read more]

    Thanks to everyone who commented on the Draft Strategic Plan. During the comment period, the Community Partnerships implementation team received a total of 164 comments from 24 reviewers on their draft strategic plan. Some were small errors, catch by careful review of the plan. Other suggestions included potential changes to the strategies, of…[Read more]

    Objective 1.7, Strategy 1.7c. Are you recognizing the staff as a whole or individuals. We do not have a volunteer coordinator, but individual staff members help with different Friends projects depending on interest and expertise. While some staff members are highly involved (a least one staff puts in a lot of his own time) others are not…[Read more]

      Really appreciate your comments, Sandy! Especially those related to recruiting volunteers to fill refuge needs and not creating refuge needs/projects to satisfy volunteer interests. I think many of us have used that strategy at one time or another, and it’s never pretty. We definitely need to be more strategic about using Service needs drive…[Read more]

      Good comments Sandy! Your comment regarding your disagreement with designating a volunteer coordinator at the top visited refuges is a good one. From my field experience, it’s frequently the better-padded refuges that continue to get more, when smaller refuges with high potential, struggling to do even the basic minimum, may rarely get thrown a…[Read more]

      Thanks, Sandy. Love your detailed comments! Regarding your last observation about setting up teams to develop some of the strategies, I’m happy to report that our Implementation Team has a few subteams already working on some products. They are working on an on-line “handbook” of materials, a web portal to host the one-stop shopping, and…[Read more]

    This draft action plan is one of several programs to support the larger Service goal of facilitating partnerships with Friends organizations and public participation in the conservation of resources. The plan reengineers the former national friends mentoring program developed 15 years ago to provide our Friends partnerships with critical…[Read more]

      Have you thought about some kind of incentive to the Refuge Staff for mentoring. They are already short-handed and I am afraid this will just seem like one more item to add to the t-do list. I am not sure what is allowed, but some kind of bonus or gift for participation. Also, will they be able to charge their time to the other Refuge? This…[Read more]

      • Joanna Webb replied 3 weeks ago

        Thank you very much Ann for your review and comments. For clarification purposes, are you referring to refuge staff who apply to be formal mentors for the national mentoring program?

        • Profile picture of %s
          Ann replied 2 weeks, 6 days ago

          Yes. I am talking about refuge staff members and not friends.

            Ann replied 2 weeks, 6 days ago

            For the second comment: I am referring to the mentoring Refuge Staff not the mentored. For instance, if our Refuge Staff helped another refuge develop a friends group, we would be taking time away from what they can accomplish at our refuge. While it is for the good of the entire system to establish a friends program everywhere, each unit has…[Read more]

            • Joanna Webb replied 2 weeks, 6 days ago

              Ah, I see where you are going with this Ann. We may need to be more clear in the Action Plan. We aren’t suggesting that refuge staff from one refuge mentor Friends from another refuge. While that can certainly happen organically, that would not be part of the formal mentoring program.

              The mentors (both individual refuge staff and Friends)…[Read more]

        I’m confused by this comment. If the refuge staff has requested a mentoring visit, why would they need extra incentives to participate? If a station has identified a need for mentoring, the Project Leader needs to communicate the importance to her/his staff.

    How do Friends feel about the 4 BOLD goals laid out in the Strategic Plan?
    1) Increase volunteer management capacity at field stations;
    2) Connect with and engage more of and a wider cross section of the American public;
    3) Encourage and support active and vibrant Friends partnerships; and
    4) Encourage and support other active and vibrant…[Read more]

    So far I like the outline. But I am waiting for the details in the full version. It will be important that everything is clear and concise so as not to lead to confusion and frustration. So far so good.

      Thanks for looking at the Handbook Outline. I agree with you about being clear and concise. I think the easier the document is to navigate, the more it will be used.

    This was a huge undertaking and the Handbook outline is very comprehensive–very impressive. It will be helpful to have all this information available in a central location. Hi Sue,
      Thank you so much for commenting on the Handbook Outline, it is much easier to incorporate comments while we continue to write the first draft, as opposed to after the draft is complete. I will do my best to answer your questions:

      It would be easier to comment on the outline if it could be copied and comments made in the document and if the outline was numerically demarcated. When I opened the outline I thought I was looking at the outline for a resource document for a Friends Group. The first 5 pages of the outline are written for Refuge staff. That is fine, but the…[Read more]
